Golden Crookstem - P. a. 'Aureoucaulis'

Phyllostachys aureosulcata f. aureocaulis is the yellow form of the bamboo commonly known as Yellow Groove.  New shoots emerge yellow/lime-green, blushed with red/purple patches on the internodes.  As culms mature, their purple color fades and they turn a deeper yellow, making a wonderful contrast to the deep green foliage.  The purple and cream striped leaf sheaths, and the occasional crooked culm also add to the beauty of this bamboo.  It can reach a height of around 30’ with a maximum diameter of 1.5”.  In western Washington, it retains its lush, green foliage through winter, and is reportedly cold hardy to -15 degrees F.  Grows best in full sun (best coloring) but does well in partially shaded areas too.  This bamboo is wonderful as a screen, specimen plant for a focal point, or grove in a larger garden area.

Planting History:

I purchased this plant from Bamboo Gardener and planted it out in March, 1999.   It was immediately vigorous and prolific, even though it was in a mostly shaded location.  In summer 2002, I dug up, divided, and transplanted a propagation to a full sun location in the yard where it is thriving in coarse sand (left over from a septic drain field and pushed to the edge of my yard) that I amended with 12” of composted horse manure prior to planting. It receives some irrigation in summer.
