Sweetshoot Bamboo - Phyllostachys dulcis Description: Phyllostachys dulcis, is named for its sweet shoots, which are considered to be one of the finest for eating. This species has large, strongly tapered culms reaching a height of 30' - 40' with a culm diameter of 2" - 3". This one is not for small spaces or right next to a walk, since it leans heavily toward the sun, but the leaning masses of lush, green foliage are highly ornamental. To spread and increase in culm size quickly, it needs full sun exposure, and should be grown in moist, organic, slightly acid soil. Reportedly cold hardy down to 0 degrees F. Planting History: I acquired my first plant from an unnamed bamboo grower in September 1998, and initially planted it out in a shady area adjacent to a wooded greenbelt. It sat for the next two growing seasons virtually unchanged, so I purchased an additional plant from Bamboo Gardener in August 2000. After very poor shoot production in 2001 and 2002 from both plants, I moved them to a sunnier location in April 2003 (in my cool soils this bamboo doesn’t shoot until late May or June). In Spring 2004, the planting finally produced a few larger, upright shoots about 20’ tall and over an 1” in diameter at the base. This bamboo has been slow to establish in my cool soils, This bamboo is very phytotropic, and in the shady location, leaned almost flat out toward the sun.
