Giant Black Bamboo - Phyllostachys nigra 'Daikokuchiku' Description: Phyllostachys nigra 'Daikokuchiku' is told to be a giant form form of black bamboo that reaches heights of over 50' with a culm diameter of over 3". It is debated whether the size of this bamboo is environmental or genetic. Regardless, to reach maximum size it will need full sun, lots of water, and rich, organic, slightly acid soils. Hardiness should be similar to other P. nigra forms - about 0 degree F. Planting History: I purchased a 5 gallon container of this bamboo from Bamboo Sourcery in December 2002, and planted it out in a full sun location with heavily amended, organic soils, and summer irrigation. It produced a few new shoots in spring 2003, about what I expected for a first year transplant. In 2004, it sent up a few new shoots, the largest about 8’ tall with a .5” diameter. In fall 2004, I discovered rhizomes growing under the drive and path ways, as well as in the neighbor’s yard – some as far as 10’ from the mother plant. In January 2005, I relocated it to a shadier area adjacent to my generic black bamboo, where growing condition are likely to make it easier to contain. The culm coloration of this bamboo thus far, is at best a speckling of dark brown. I will be watching to see if culms darken in the shade of its new location.
