Henon Bamboo - Phyllostachys nigra f. henonis

Description:

Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis is actually the parent species of P.nigra (Black Bamboo) and other P. nigra forms, despite nomenclature that indicates otherwise. Henon is one of the largest timber bamboos, a vigorous spreader capable of reaching a height of 55’ with a culm diameter of up to 5”. It gets larger much quicker than Black Bamboo, has a more upright habit, and the new culms are a dusty, gray-green, turning yellow green as they mature. In mature groves, branching out occurs above head-height, forming a wonderful, canopy (a pleasure to walk or sit under!) of billowing, tiered foliage. This is a wonderful specimen for a large area, and makes a nice second-story screen.

Planting History:

I purchased a tiny but vigorous rhizome propagation of this bamboo from Phil Davidson in May 2001.  I planted it in a full sun location, in a berm created with native silty loam and a 12” depth of composted horse manure.  By summer of 2004, with minimal summer irrigation, it had spread to fill a 20’ x 20’ area with culms as high as 25’ and nearly 2” in diameter.  As well, I have taken many propagations from the perimeter of the planting to contain it.
