Phyllostachys nigra 'Megurochiku Description: Phyllostachys nigra 'Meguruchiku' is another Black Bamboo relative with green canes and brown stripes in the sulcus. In other respects, it is much like Henon Bamboo - capable of reaching heights over 55' with a culm diameter nearly 4". It thrives in rich, organic, slightly acid soils with some summer irrigation, and is cold hardy to about -5 degrees F. Planting History: I acquired this bamboo in 2000 from a private garden, where it was effectively being used in a circle planting to screen a utility pole. The brown striping is subtle, and occurs with varying intensity and distribution, or sometimes not at all (I thin out canes that don’t have striping). As of 2005, I am growing this plant strictly in containers. Click on the “next” button below to view a picture, or back to plant list . January 2005 Picture coming soon |
