Temple Bamboo - Semiarundinaria fastuosa Description: Semiarundinaria fastuosa is an upright bamboo with dense culm spacing and short branches that give it a stiff, colmunar form in the landscape. This species is the most stately and sophisticated of bamboos (my opinion of course!) lending a sense of formality and serenity to the garden. As well, the culms mature to a beautiful red-brown for stunning, close up viewing. It reaches a maximum height of about 30 feet, with a culm diameter of about one 1 inch, and is cold hardy to about -5 degrees F. It's wind and salt tolerant too, so it makes a great hedge, as well as a single specimen Planting History: I purchased a 5 gallon container of this bamboo from Jade Mountain Bamboo in September 2002, and initially planted it in a sunny location adjacent to a drive way and gravel path. After a single growing season, I discovered many deep-growing rhizomes under the path, which brought me to the realization that I had no more room or energy for another running bamboo, regardless of its beauty. In spring 2004, I dug up and divided the plant into several propagations, and continue to grow it as a container plant as of 2005.
