Big Leaf Bamboo - Indoclamus tesselatus

Description:

Indocalamus tesellatus, is known for its large leaves, which can grow up to 2 feet long and 4 inches wide on mature plantings.  This bamboo can reach a height of about 7’ with culms about the diameter of a pencil.  Although it is a spreading bamboo, it is somewhat slow to get started.  It will thrive in full shade growing in rich, moist, slightly acid soils, and is cold hardy to about -5 degrees F.  It will eventually form a large green mound of coarse foliage perfect for creating a tropical look in full shade, growing in a container on a shady patio or next to a water feature.

Planting History:

I purchased a small plant of this bamboo from Bamboo Garden Nursery in December 2002 and planted it out in the full shade of a north-facing wall.  It has steadily increased in spread and size, but is far from the maximum size.  The tallest 2004 stems are 2’- 3’ tall and have leaves 15” – 18” long.
