Green Onion Bamboo - Pseudosasa japonica 'Tsutsumiana'

Description:

Pseudosasa japoncia 'Tsutsumiana' differs from the species in that it has somewhat swollen internodes that resemble the shape of a green onion.  As with the species, it grows to a height of about 18’, with a culm diameter of .75 inches, is cold hardy to -5 degrees, tolerates windy open sites well, and does well in part to nearly full shade.

Planting History:

I purchased this bamboo from Jade Mountain Bamboo in September 2002 to add to my collection, and have grown it strictly as a container plant in full shade, where it has grown steadily, and yielded several small propagations in 2004.

Young plants have to size up before the swollen nodes become noticeable, and will have to be sited for close viewing to appreciate them.
