Phyllostachys rubromarginata

Description:

Phyllostachys rubromarginata is a just a great bamboo all around.  It’s tough, fast to establish, tolerates a wide range of soils, has edible shoots and strong wood, and has proved to be drought tolerant.  It is very upright in habit, and can grow to over 50’ with a culm diameter of 3”.  Does best in full sun, and is cold hardy to -5 degrees F.

Planting History:

I purchased this bamboo from Bamboo Gardener in March 1999, and planted it out in full sun, in a 5’ x 10’ berm amended with a 12” depth of composted horse manure.  It rapidly established and moved out of the berm, into the surrounding, poor soils.  With very little summer irrigation, and no additional fertilizer, it continued to increase in size and spread.  Big, fast, tough and green!

In summer 2003, I noted a round, yellow splotches, and general yellowing of the leaves.  After applications of a Scotts granular grass fertilizer (with micros) in summer 2003, spring and summer 2004, the new foliage is a lush, solid green.
