As of January 2005, culms from both years have the swollen branchlets that indicate the onset of flowers.  Flowering for this species ultimately ends with plant failure, so it is disappointing that the plant won’t come into its full splendor. Inflorescence initiation - "buds" remind remind me of miniature ears of corn.
