Fargesia rufa

Description:

Fargesia rufa is a newer introduction that is fast becoming popular for its vigor and versatility.  It's easy to propagate, performs better in full sun than any other fargesia (my experience in western Washington) and sports striking, orange-red leaf sheaths that are truly remarkable on established plantings.  It has an upright habit and reaches a height of 6 -7 feet, so it's perfect as a specimen in areas with height restrictions, containers, or creating a short hedgerow. The jury is still out on cold hardiness, but reports indicate it's hardy to -20 degrees F.  You'll love this bamboo!

Planting History:

I purchased my first plants from Boo-Shoot Gardens in May 2004, and planted a division from one in fall 2004, in a half-sun location.

The container plants I have purchased for resale, have performed wonderfully in full shade and full sun (keeping the container shaded to protect roots from overheating).  Reports indicate that this bamboo is doing well even in the heat and cold of the Eastern Washington desert.
